The heart of BWH was beating strongly in support of National Wear Red Day on Feb. 3, as hundreds donned red to raise awareness of women’s heart disease and participate in a group photo in the Tower Lobby.
“Seeing so many of my BWH colleagues in support of Wear Red Day indicates to me that the awareness of women’s heart disease is greater than ever,” said BW/F President Betsy Nabel, MD. “I want to thank everyone who participated and continues to support this worthy cause.” National Wear Red Day was established to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of women in America. Through National Wear Red Day and the Heart Truth Campaign, initiated by Dr. Nabel during her time at NHLBI, awareness has increased exponentially over the past 10 years.
In the Tower Lobby, as staff assembled, visitors, patients and other employees were curious about why everyone was wearing red, and more than a few conversations were started around the importance of awareness and prevention regarding cardiovascular disease in women. Diana Capone of Radiology said wearing red symbolized some of the healthy choices she’s made in the past year. Sujeeta Silwal, also of Radiology, was happy to be a part of Wear Red Day and among those women dedicated to a healthy lifestyle.
“It’s creating awareness for us women and that is superb,” said Gloria Castro, operations supervisor of the NICU. “It [heart disease] has become so common in women and we really need to be attentive to it.”
